Meta* has released screenshots showing how users will be prompted in WhatsApp and Facebook** Messenger to select how they want to manage third-party chats. According to these images, users will have the option to mix these chats with their “native” conversations or keep them separate.
The company plans to introduce third-party chat support for users in the EU. This means users of WhatsApp and Facebook** Messenger will be able to communicate with people using other messaging apps. However, there are no details yet on how these conversations will be merged.
Company representatives noted that the support for third-party chats won’t be just a superficial feature. It will include nearly all functionalities such as reactions, direct replies, and the “Typing…” indicator. Users may also be able to create group chats with contacts from different apps. This feature is expected to roll out in 2027. It remains unclear whether these capabilities will be extended to users in other regions.
