In an interview with Dartmouth Engineering, OpenAI’s CTO Mira Murati revealed that the next iteration of ChatGPT will possess intelligence “at the level of a PhD.” She noted the clear progression in the chatbot’s capabilities: while ChatGPT-3 had the cognitive abilities of a child, ChatGPT-4 displayed knowledge akin to that of a high school senior.

However, Murati acknowledged that the upcoming version of ChatGPT won’t be an all-knowing entity. She emphasized that, despite its advanced intelligence, the neural network will still fall short in specialized areas compared to human experts.

The interview also touched on the tentative release timeline for ChatGPT-5. Murati highlighted that, if everything goes according to plan, the AI is expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026.

For American readers, this development signals a significant leap in AI capabilities, promising more sophisticated and nuanced interactions with the next generation of ChatGPT.
