Snapdragon X Elite Laptops’ Battery Life Compared to MacBooks, New York, NY 10001

The team at Tom’s Hardware tested new laptops powered by Qualcomm’s ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite processor. Their primary focus was battery life, as Windows laptops have struggled to compete with Apple’s devices in this area in recent years.

Many hoped that the introduction of Snapdragon X Elite would be as significant for Windows laptops’ battery life as the M1 chip was for MacBooks. While there has been progress, it isn’t as substantial as some had anticipated.

The testing involved web browsing over Wi-Fi with screen brightness set to 150 nits. The table below presents the results for four laptops based on the Snapdragon X Elite.

The hybrid Surface Pro lasted 12 hours and 14 minutes, only slightly better than the two-year-old Surface Pro 9 with Microsoft’s ARM-based SQ3 chip, which lasted 11 hours and 50 minutes. Other test participants performed better, with the HP Omnibook X leading the pack, managing 15 hours and 48 minutes. While this is an impressive result, there have already been Intel and AMD-powered models on the market capable of nearly 14 hours of operation: the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with Intel Core i7-1335U (13 hours and 45 minutes) and the MSI Prestige 16 AI Evo (13 hours and 4 minutes).

When compared to Apple laptops, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip lasted 17 hours and 16 minutes in the test, while the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the more powerful M3 Max lasted 17 hours and 11 minutes. It’s important to note that these MacBooks are equipped with 70Wh and 100Wh batteries, respectively, which are significantly larger than their Windows counterparts. Therefore, theoretically, the battery life wouldn’t differ drastically if the battery capacities were equal.
