Quantum Refrigerator: China Introduces Origin SL1000

China has achieved a significant breakthrough in quantum computing infrastructure by launching into production the Origin SL1000, a facility designed to create ultra-low temperatures. Manufactured in Hefei City, Anhui Province, the device was developed by the Anhui Quantum Computing Research Center and can accommodate 840 cables. Zhang Junfen, a representative of the center, noted, “The Origin SL400 accommodates 336 special high-frequency coaxial cables for extremely low temperatures, while the Origin SL1000 can handle 840 cables, meeting stringent requirements for creating operational conditions for quantum chips with over 100 qubits.”

This new device demonstrates China’s capability in low-temperature technology and marks a significant advancement in the landscape of quantum computing. The installation for achieving ultra-low temperatures, which creates an environment with extremely low temperatures, is a key component in developing superconducting quantum computers.

Zhang emphasized that the Origin SL400 provides an impressive cooling capacity of 400 micro watts at -273.05°C, while the even more powerful Origin SL1000 increases this capacity to an impressive 1000 micro watts under the same extreme conditions. This substantial improvement can be likened to upgrading an air conditioner from 1.5 to a robust 3 horsepower, highlighting a colossal leap in performance.

The Anhui Quantum Computing Research Center was established through fruitful collaboration between Benyuan Quantum and the Key Laboratory of Quantum Information, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The center focuses on the promising field of quantum computing and strives to actively promote innovative engineering developments and stimulate the industrialization of quantum computers in China.

The ultra-low temperature achieving installation is a highly technological closed cooling system capable of creating conditions colder than the vacuum of outer space. Its impressive cooling capacity is typically achieved through the release of heat from mixing rare isotopes of helium-3 (He-3) and helium-4 (He-4). This is made possible by helium’s unique property: its two isotopes can remain dissolved even at extremely low temperatures, whereas other liquids at sufficiently low temperatures completely fractionate.

The advanced Origin SL1000 system provides an extremely low temperature environment below record-setting 10 mK and outstanding cooling capacity of no less than 400 μW at 100 mK, with an impressive cooling time of just 30 hours and heating time of 24 hours. This breakthrough progress showcases China’s significant achievements in advanced quantum technologies and solidifies its leading position in the global landscape of quantum computing.
