Prime Video’s Next Big Series: Tomb Raider

The long-rumored Tomb Raider series is officially coming to Prime Video. Following the success of its Fallout show, Prime Video has announced a new series adaptation of the iconic Tomb Raider games.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, acclaimed for her work on the comedy series Fleabag and as the original showrunner and head writer of Killing Eve, will write and produce the series. Waller-Bridge is also known for her acting roles in films such as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Solo: A Star Wars Story, where she voiced the droid L3-37.

The casting for Lara Croft, the character famously portrayed by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in previous adaptations, has not yet been revealed.

Amazon Games vice president Christoph Hartmann expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “With great IP, the possibilities are endless. The richness and depth of the fiction allow the Tomb Raider series from Prime Video and the videogame from Amazon Games to tell separate stories about Lara Croft’s adventures. We’re honored that Crystal Dynamics has entrusted Amazon with this iconic franchise, and we’re looking forward to seeing where this collaboration takes us.”

While some might debate the depth of the Tomb Raider narrative, the success of the Fallout series gives Amazon some credibility in handling video game adaptations. Tomb Raider’s more flexible narrative structure might offer Waller-Bridge and her team greater creative freedom compared to the more tightly bound lore of other game-based series.

Details on the series’ release date remain under wraps. Amazon has confirmed that it will be exclusive to Prime Video and promises to share more updates as the projects develop. Additionally, Amazon Games is also working on a new Tomb Raider game, described as a “single-player, narrative-driven adventure” that will continue Lara Croft’s story. The release date for the game is also yet to be announced.
