OpenAI intends to purchase fusion energy from Helion in “huge volumes”

OpenAI, known for enhancing its AI systems, is reportedly planning to purchase large quantities of energy from fusion energy developer Helion. According to Datacenter Dynamics, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who is also the chairman of Helion’s board of directors, has personally invested $375 million in the company along with other major IT industry players.

Fusion energy promises nearly unlimited supplies of cheap, clean electricity in the future. Despite significant investments, no commercial solutions currently exist in this field. Helion, however, claims that its fusion power plant will be operational by 2028, utilizing helium-3, whereas most other companies rely on tritium in their designs.

Last year, Microsoft signed an agreement with Helion to purchase clean energy, marking the first fusion energy contract of its kind. Under this deal, Helion will supply Microsoft with up to 50 MW of carbon-free energy. Additionally, Microsoft, an investor in OpenAI, is collaborating with the company on the Stargate AI data center project, which will have a capacity of 5 GW. The project, costing $100 billion, is set to launch in 2028.

Altman has previously emphasized that new energy technologies like fusion power are essential for AI infrastructure due to the high demands of advanced systems. He stated that meeting these challenges is impossible without a significant breakthrough, advocating for fusion energy or a combination of extremely cheap solar cells with energy storage solutions on a massive scale.
