Nokia is developing the IVAS codec designed to introduce spatial audio capabilities into mobile communication. Recently, they showcased the first video call with immersive audio support, highlighting its industry-wide importance. The call was made by Nokia’s President, Pekka Lundmark, who spoke with Stefan Lindstrom, heading digitalization and new technologies in Finland.
Even modern smartphones typically use monophonic communication, compressing audio into a single channel. The IVAS codec (3GPP Immersive Video and Audio Services) is part of the 5G Advanced standard. Instead of compressing sound, it allows callers to experience “fully immersive audio” akin to cinematic sound.
Nokia believes that service providers, chipset manufacturers, and smartphone makers are ready to adopt IVAS into their devices. According to Reuters journalists, there won’t be a more captivating technology enhancement for audio and video communication in cellular networks in the coming years.
This innovation promises to revolutionize audio experiences for users, potentially enhancing communication across the USA and globally.
