Nintendo has begun issuing DMCA strikes for musical scores from its games.

Nintendo is known for its uncompromising stance on piracy: its legal team regularly demands the removal of anything that infringes on copyright, even when it comes to musical notes.

While Nintendo’s desire to remove emulators that allow games to be played without a Nintendo Switch is understandable and justified, their latest move has surprised many. Communities on YouTube that create musical scores for Nintendo game music have started receiving DMCA strikes. Several channel owners, like Sheet Music Boss, have reported this issue.

It’s hard not to agree with the arguments put forward by Sheet Music Boss, and even harder to understand Nintendo’s logic. If people are playing music from their games, it means the community is thriving and their projects are receiving free advertising. However, Nintendo seems most concerned about the fact that someone might be profiting from their intellectual property. The copyright universe operates according to its own, not always understandable, laws.

This development reflects Nintendo’s ongoing efforts to protect its intellectual property, affecting fans and content creators, including those in the USA who enjoy sharing and playing Nintendo game music online.
