Despite a high-profile advertising campaign, the Humane AI Pin gadget appears to be struggling in the market. According to industry reports, customers are increasingly returning their purchases, and many who pre-ordered the device are canceling before receiving it.
The Humane AI Pin is a screenless smartphone designed to be worn like a brooch on clothing. It features a built-in projector that displays information on the user’s palm and supports various AI functions powered by the GPT-4 language model.
According to online sources, between August 2023 and May this year, 10,000 units were shipped, but only 7,000 were sold. As a result, the company earned just $9 million, with $1 million in returns. Representatives from Humane told The Verge that these figures are inaccurate, but they did not provide alternative statistics.
Media outlets attribute the rising number of returns to the device’s high price tag ($699) and a recent incident involving the risk of the AI Pin catching fire due to battery issues.
