One of the significant additions in iOS 18 is a special gaming mode designed to enhance gaming performance and stability by limiting background processes and reducing latency when using wireless headphones. Initial tests of this feature have already surfaced online.
The graph above shows a comparison of Genshin Impact’s performance over 30 minutes on an iPhone 15 Pro Max without gaming mode (green) and with it (blue). It’s evident that activating the feature indeed increases frame rates and stability. Without gaming mode, the average frame rate was 57.1 fps with deviations up to 8.9 fps. With gaming mode enabled, the average frame rate rose to 59.4 fps, and deviations reduced significantly to 0.3 fps.
Gaming mode also reduces power consumption, from 5.4 to 5.3 watts, which should positively impact battery life. Meanwhile, heating remains identical in both scenarios at up to 49.2 degrees Celsius.
It’s worth noting that iOS 18 is currently in its first beta stage, with approximately three months until the stable release. It’s possible that Apple will further optimize the gaming mode during this time, especially given the recent emphasis the company has placed on gaming features.
