Enthusiast Turns Baldur’s Gate III into an 8-Bit Demake for a 40-Year-Old Laptop

Modders and enthusiasts have been pushing the boundaries with Baldur’s Gate III, which took the internet by storm last year. One such enthusiast has taken it to the next level by porting the game to a 40-year-old laptop.

Developer Alex Bowen created an 8-bit demake of Baldur’s Gate III, complete with black-and-white pixelated graphics, a flat and stylized environment, separate dialogue menus, text descriptions for cutscenes, and even a turn-based combat system. He chose to run this demake on a TRS-80 Model 100 laptop, which was released in 1983. This device features a 2.4 MHz processor, a few kilobytes of RAM, and an LCD display with a resolution of 240×62 pixels.

Bowen named his creation “Mol” and is distributing it for free. Anyone interested can download and try the game. For those who prefer modern technology, you’ll need to wait a bit longer: official support for contemporary mods in Baldur’s Gate III is expected this fall.
