Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has announced that the company is gearing up for its first mission to the Red Planet with its Starship spacecraft. He shared the timeline for the launch and revealed an important detail about this ambitious mission.
“The first [Starship units] will be launched to Mars in two years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. These flights will be unmanned, aimed at testing the reliability of landing on Mars. If these landings are successful, we could see the first crewed missions to Mars in about four years,” Musk explained.
Musk also mentioned that if the mission is successful, the frequency of flights would increase exponentially. Following that, the company’s goal would be to establish a self-sustaining Martian city within the next 20 years. The most recent test flight of Starship took place in June and faced some challenges.
