Classic Revived: New Trailer for Gothic Remake Released

In the winter of 2019, THQ Nordic released a playable teaser for the remake of the cult RPG Gothic. Since then, the title has been slowly but surely progressing towards its release, with an emphasis on “slowly.”

Over the weekend, the publisher unveiled a new trailer for the project, finally showcasing RPG gameplay. As seen in the trailer, the gameplay has evolved over the past five years, now more closely resembling the original. Alkimia Interactive has taken fan feedback to heart, revamping the combat system and focusing on enhancing the weaker aspects of the original game.

In an interview with THQ Nordic’s business development lead Reinhard Pollice and community manager Timur Khodyrev, it was revealed that the developers aim to fill in plot holes and expand on some of the original game’s concepts. The story will remain the same but will gain more depth and significance.

“When we began developing the Gothic 1 Remake, we delved into the archives of the original series. There were many cool ideas that were either unused or not fully realized in the final game,” said Pollice.

“There are many inconsistencies between the first and second Gothic games. With Gothic 1 Remake, we aim to make the transition between the remake and the existing Gothic 2 more seamless and logical. We are not creating the Gothic 1 Remake in isolation from the events of Gothic 2; we keep the next game’s plot in mind,” Khodyrev added.

THQ Nordic and Alkimia Interactive also shed light on last year’s demo featuring the adventures of fan-favorite character Nyras. This 30-40 minute prologue was shown to journalists at Gamescom 2024, but the team is still undecided about releasing it to the public.

The developers also revealed that the world of Gothic Remake will be 30% larger than the original (initially aiming for a 15% increase). This expansion will particularly impact the New Camp and the Sect Camp, which previously lacked content. The controls will be updated, and certain campaign elements, especially the less successful second half, will be reworked. In other good news, the new Gothic will be fully localized in Russian, with plans to involve familiar voice actors.

The full interview can be read on the “M.Video” website, where the developers discuss many details about the upcoming game—except, unfortunately, the release date, which remains shrouded in mystery.
