Chrome for Android Adds Text-to-Speech Feature

Chrome for Android now includes a text-to-speech feature. Currently, this functionality is available only in the Android version of the browser when viewing pages with substantial text content. Short articles won’t trigger the feature. To use it, open the page with a lengthy text, go to the main menu (three dots in the upper right corner), and select “Read Aloud This Page.” If Google deems the text insufficient, the option will not appear in the menu.

Once enabled, a player will appear on the screen with a scroll bar, playback settings, and a pause button. Conveniently, the feature supports reading aloud texts in Russian, including those translated by Google’s built-in translator. Users can choose from four English voices and two Russian voices. Playback speed can be adjusted, ranging from 0.5x to 4x. You can switch to other tabs during playback, and the player will remain visible. However, exiting the browser will stop the reading, but it will remember where it left off.

For quick access, you can add the read-aloud button to the browser’s toolbar: go to the browser menu (three dots) → Settings → Advanced → Toolbar Button, and select the desired option.

If the read-aloud feature is not available, ensure the text is sufficiently long and that Chrome version 125 is installed on your Android device.
