CD Projekt RED Admits Overuse of Witcher Sense in The Witcher 3

Most gamers have encountered the mechanic of using special vision to highlight clues and important items in games. This feature was heavily utilized in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and while CD Projekt RED is proud of the results, they acknowledge some missteps.

According to game designer Paweł Sasko, during the development of The Witcher 3 in 2012, the detective vision mechanic (or Witcher Sense) was a novel idea. The team at CDPR was so enamored with this feature that they packed the game with quests centered around clue hunting. However, by the time they worked on the DLCs, they realized they had overdone it. To avoid player fatigue, they decided to reduce the number of such activities in the expansions.

Sasko believes that the experience gained from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt helped the studio refine mechanics in their other games. He specifically mentioned being pleased with how similar quests turned out in the “Phantom Liberty” expansion. Sasko feels that the pacing and use of the clue-hunting mechanic were particularly well-balanced there.
