Bethesda plans to release story add-ons for Starfield once a year

Starfield may not have taken off as high as Bethesda Softworks wanted, but the space RPG can’t be called a failure either. Therefore, the developers intend to support the title with content for many years to come. Todd Howard, the most famous representative of Bethesda, talked to blogger MrMattyPlays. During the conversation, he shared details of the first DLC for the game and noted that the development of Shattered Space went traditionally: since the add-on’s setting was one location, the authors did without procedural generation and similar tricks. Howard also mentioned that the company intends to release about one story add-on per year for Starfield. How many years Bethesda Softworks will dedicate to the RPG is unclear.

The developer once again shared the game’s successes (the title was tried by 14 million people; on average, they spent 40 hours in space), and also expressed regret for the negative reaction to paid mods. In particular, he hoped that the audience would perceive the same quest for $7 differently, not as “cut content that is sold for money.” In general, the designer believes that supporting modders with money is a good practice that helps to make professionals out of them.

Starfield’s Story to Unfold with Annual Expansions

While Bethesda Softworks’ spacefaring RPG, Starfield, might not have reached the stratospheric heights some had anticipated, it’s far from being a celestial flop. With that in mind, the developers are committed to extending the game’s lifespan with a steady stream of content for years to come.

In a recent conversation with blogger MrMattyPlays, Todd Howard, a prominent figurehead at Bethesda, shed light on the first DLC for the game. He revealed that the development of Shattered Space followed a traditional approach, opting for a single, handcrafted location rather than relying on procedural generation techniques. Additionally, Howard hinted at a cadence of roughly one story expansion per year for Starfield. The duration of Bethesda Softworks’ dedication to the RPG remains to be seen.

Howard also took the opportunity to reiterate the game’s positive reception, highlighting that 14 million players have embarked on their cosmic journeys, spending an average of 40 hours exploring the vast expanse. However, he acknowledged the mixed reactions surrounding the paid mods initiative, expressing his hope that the $7 quest in particular would not be perceived as “cut content” but rather as an extension of the game’s narrative. Overall, Howard maintained his stance that financially supporting modders is a valuable practice that fosters their growth and expertise.
