BiVACOR has developed the world’s first fully mechanical heart using magnetic levitation technology, similar to that used in high-speed rail lines. This innovation has the potential to save many lives of patients in need of heart transplants.
Surgeons have already performed the operation at the Texas Heart Institute. The implant contains a titanium biventricular rotary pump with a magnetic drive. This technology replaces the functions of both heart ventricles in cases of heart failure.
The main advantage of this transplant is the absence of friction, which makes it more durable. BiVACOR has been working on this project since 2013, emphasizing that magnetic levitation technology opens new horizons in the creation of artificial organs.
These new transplants aim to improve the lives of people suffering from severe heart failure. Importantly, this development is intended as a temporary solution for patients awaiting a real heart transplant.
