Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that Apple is planning a rapid upgrade of all Mac computers to the M4 chip, which supports AI. By the end of the year, we can expect the release of the iMac, the base MacBook Pro 14 with the standard M4, and the higher-end MacBook Pro 14 and 16 with the M4 Pro. New Mac Mini models are also slated for release during this period.
In 2025, the rush to update the Mac lineup will continue with the release of new MacBook Air 13 and 15 models in the spring, a Mac Studio mid-year, and a Mac Pro by the end of the year—all equipped with M4 chips. The Mac Studio and Mac Pro will feature increased RAM capacities of up to 512 GB, up from the previous maximum of 192 GB.
So why the rush? Apple’s urgency is driven by two main factors. First, there was a 27% drop in Mac sales last year. The situation did not improve with the launch of new laptops featuring the M3 chip, as the performance gains over the M2 were minimal.
Second, the intense competition in the AI space is pressing Apple to act quickly. The company is currently seen as lagging behind in the AI race. The future is clearly leaning towards AI, and what’s popular in technology trends often translates to profitability. Thus, Apple is eager to release new Macs with advanced AI capabilities to close the gap and stay competitive in the market.
This strategic shift is particularly relevant for the U.S. market, where cutting-edge technology and AI integration are highly valued.
