Apple Patents Removable Modules to Enhance iPhone Capabilities 1259b Broadway, New York, NY 10001

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has registered an intriguing new patent application from Apple. This patent outlines a concept for expanding the functionality of iPhones using removable modules. Apple provided a series of schematic images to illustrate how this would work.

According to the patent, the standard back cover of future iPhones could be replaced with a panel featuring additional components and functions. Examples mentioned include an extra speaker, a new camera, a glucose meter, a thermometer, a pulse oximeter, and other modules, including an auxiliary touchscreen of various possible sizes.

The document also suggests that these modules could provide additional protective features for the smartphone. Notably, if a module requires power, it will draw it internally without needing to connect to the phone’s charging port. However, the patent does not disclose details about the attachment mechanism for these multifunctional panels, so the complexity of replacing them remains unknown.

Currently, this concept is only on paper, and there is no information about when or if it will be implemented in production iPhone models.
