Following firmware updates for smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches, Apple has unveiled a new version of its augmented reality headset operating system. The company detailed what the device will “learn” from the update and also released a patch for the current OS version. One of the main innovations is the addition of a new feature in the “Photos” app. It now has the ability to convert regular photos into volumetric 3D-effect images using machine learning algorithms. Additionally, the app includes a SharePlay feature for quickly sharing content with other users.
Moreover, the gadget has received support for higher resolution when operating in virtual display mode for Mac computers. According to developers, the effect now rivals using two ultra-wide 4K monitors simultaneously. The device also introduces a “standalone” mode for viewing multimedia files in high quality during train travel.
Finally, Apple has announced a new 3D lens in collaboration with Canon for the EOS R7 digital camera. This lens can be used to create content optimized for the headset. Among the smaller changes are improved mouse support, new gestures, and slightly redesigned app icon layouts. Additionally, Apple has released an update for the current firmware to visionOS 1.2. The most noticeable changes include:
- Device and user registration based on Apple ID identifiers
- Ability to attach closed captions when viewing Apple Immersive Video
- Enhanced customization options for digital avatars
- More accurate cursor positioning for text input and fixes for existing keyboard issues
- Improved reliability in detecting and connecting to Mac via Mac Virtual Display
- Resolved issues with Universal Control and Bluetooth functionality
- Added capability to configure device settings using a closed Wi-Fi network.
The visionOS update is now available for installation. The exact release date for visionOS 2 has not been announced yet but is expected sometime in the fall of this year.
